What is growth arrest line?

Growth arrest lines, also known as Harris lines, are horizontal lines that can be visible in long bones of the body when viewed under X-rays or CT scans.

These lines indicate a temporary growth arrest or interruption in the growth of the bone during childhood or adolescence due to nutritional deficiencies, illness, injury, or extreme physical stress.

The formation of growth arrest lines occurs due to changes in the bone's normal growth pattern, resulting in a slowing or stopping of bone growth.

Growth arrest lines are commonly found in the lower leg bones of children and adolescents and can usually be seen in both legs.

In most cases, the presence of growth arrest lines does not cause any pain or discomfort, and there is usually no need for any medical intervention. However, they are often used by doctors as an indication of past illness or trauma in childhood and can provide useful information in diagnosis and treatment planning.
